JACI JONES
A textile artist, working in a variety of media, my preference is for free-motion machine embroidery, which involves moving the surface rather than the drawing implement. I find this exciting and relaxing at the same time.
This process provides the opportunity to draw with thread on textured surfaces where media such as pens or pencils would not be practical. I work on a variety of surfaces, particularly those which are handmade or recycled, including textiles, paper, plastic and metal. I am currently developing a range of textile jewellery.
I enjoy taking time to observe the shapes, colours and patterns around me and capturing these in my sketchbook. I coined the term 'stroodling' - from strolling / drawing / doodling - for the work, inspired by 'crazy patchwork' that I produce in this way. I am currently inspired by seashores and Cardiff's Parklife.
I feel fortunate to live very close to Bute Park and to work part-time, just a few minutes' walk away from home, in Cardiff Pedal Power. This is a charity, aimed at making cycling accessible to all, which is based in the caravan park in Pontcanna Fields.
