Island Echoes Flat Holm Art Exhibition in Cardiff

'Most residents of Cardiff and the Vale have seen Flat Holm with its iconic lighthouse out in the heart of the Bristol Channel. Over the past few years an increasing number of people have visited the island itself, taking day-trips between March and October, to discover the fascinating nature and history of this island retreat.

Local artists from The Cardiff Drawing Group are now bringing a taste of the island back to Cardiff for the exhibition 'Island Echoes', which captures the wealth of personal artistic responses inspired by Flat Holm.

The exhibition will run from Wednesday July the 9th until Saturday the 30th of August at the Cole & Co Gallery in Lochaber Street, Roath.
Island Echoes is an exhibition of Flat Holm inspired artworks: drawings, paintings, writings, photographs, textiles, sculptures and ideas for film.  The artists are from Cardiff Drawing Group, a collective of art, design and media professionals, who work within a wide variety of disciplines and regard drawing as an essential component of their creative practices.
The group describe Flat Holm as a strangely attractive little island off the coast of Cardiff that was for many centuries a refuge for saints, sinners, soldiers, sailors, smugglers, scientists and seagulls.

Cardiff Council's Executive Member for Sports, Leisure and Culture Nigel Howells said; "This is an excellent way to capture the spirit of Flat Holm and its appeal to the many who visit the island every year.  I would also encourage people to take the opportunity to go across to Flat Holm on one of the many day trips that run until the end of October 2008."

Flat Holm, a strangely attractive little island off the coast of Cardiff; it may be casually observed as the small, flattish island with the lighthouse, situated in the Bristol Channel.

For many centuries a refuge for saints, sinners, soldiers, sailors, smugglers, scientists and seagulls, the island resonates with rich layers of natural and human history.
